Courtauld Gallery – Highlights from the Permanent Collection: French Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism

Friends of PSAD latest art lecture was held in PSAD school on the 25 June. Nick Pearson is an internationally exhibited contemporary visual artist, studio tutor and art history lecturer. Courtauld Gallery has just re-opened after major renovation work on the building in Somerset House.

Here is a review by Jane Allan (Friends committee team) along with photos by Robert Obreja (PSAD School team) – click for larger view.

Nick Pearson gave a fascinating lecture on the impressionist and post impressionist paintings collected by Samuel Courtauld, the textile industrialist, who founded the Courtauld Institute. He described the collection as being the best outside Paris and the quality being exceptional. Artists discussed included Manet, Cezanne, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Van Gogh and Gauguin. Nick included interesting details of the artists working lives and relationships as well as an informed critique of their paintings.
The evening was well attended and the notes from the lecture will be available if anyone would like a copy.
