Jane Allan reviews an enjoyable and insightful lecture organised by the Friends of PSAD on Saturday 17th June 2023.

Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff delivered a lecture on Vermeer at PSAD that was specifically aimed at us, knowing that we were artists. It was a captivating talk with many details, not only of Vermeer’s working practice and his use of camera obscura but also of his life in Delft. As Mariska is Dutch she gave us some fascinating observations of his family life, surroundings and the culture of Holland in the 17th century. We also learnt the reason why the Rijksmuseum put on the recent Vermeer exhibition and of some of the paintings that didn’t travel to Amsterdam.

Mariska is giving a series of lectures in Richmond and has kindly offered to give a discount to any students who wish to attend, just mention PSAD. Details are available at her website www.arthistoricallondon.com/calendar
