Ray Barker had an early and important involvement in the creation of Putney School of Art. Ray was part of the group of students who formed themselves into the Friends of Putney Art School when it was threatened with closure some twenty years ago. They were successful in keeping it open, with Ray becoming the first Head of the newly formed Putney School of Art and Design.

His significant skills as a designer meant he understood well the needs of the students and he pressed ahead with energy and style to make an Art School that was creative and original. It was not too restricted by rules and regulations and attracted many interesting designers and artists who under his care acquired new talents and formed a lively community. He fought many battles to keep the school alive and he is owed an enormous debt.
Stylish in his distinguished clothes and smart black hat he will be a loss to us all.
