SUNDAY POTTERY WORKSHOP – EMILY STUBBS
A MARRIAGE OF PAINTING AND CLAY
We are delighted to be hosting a masterclass with ceramicist Emily Stubbs who is known for her beautiful, abstract, sometimes fragmented, handbuilt vessels which explore the relationship between colour, form and texture. Working mainly in white earthenware or terracotta, Emily uses slips, underglazes and oxides to bring colour and depth to her pieces through painting and mark making. She has said’. “I love playing with oppositions: rough, torn edges against smooth, clean lines; glossy glazed surfaces beside matte, unglazed areas; bursts of colour contrasting with bare clay”. Most notably slip marks, the impression of tools, or even fingerprints are integral parts of the finished vessel. Without reliance on excessive tools, Emily believes, these details connect the maker to the work in a way that is reminiscent of fingerprints left on ancient pottery.
The day will consist of making and decorating vessels under Emily’s expert guidance. All materials will be available in the studio. As always, places are limited. £80 including lunch, tea and coffee.
